Need a Hand with Your Anxiety?

Have you ever found yourself sitting in a meeting or as a passenger in a car and noticed that you’re breathing shallow breaths, your stomach shoulders or chest are knotted up, and you’re feeling anything but present? That’s a great time to break out an acupressure massage ring and feel the relief they bring instantly. Just roll that little metal thing up and down all of your fingers, and see what happens….almost always, you’ll notice instant positive changes in your body and mind. You can find them at the link below, and thank a fellow RhythmLife client for this fabulous tip!

Reasons to Say ‘No’ to Plans

Do you frequently find that you’re scheduled to do something, and you wish you weren’t? If so, you are definitely not alone. Many people I talk to reveal that they are over-committed, both socially and otherwise. If you’d like, take some time before one of these plans has happened, and ask yourself if any of the following are true. If they are, try to plan some time with your schedule and evaluate everything on it in the same way. Would you be happier afterwards if you’d had that time to yourself? To your family, spouse, or close friend?

Are some of these your REASONS TO SAY ‘NO’ ? :

  • you don't want to go

  • you never get time to yourself, and this is your opportunity

  • you have a long to-do list you actually feel like tackling!

  • you’d feel much calmer if you cleaned the house

  • you could watch that movie you’ve been dying to see!

  • you’re overwhelmed and need a nap

  • you’re already volunteering at school/work/etc.

  • you haven’t spent any special time w/your child, spouse, etc. in quite a while

Fun Tricks for Managing Your Anxiety

For those people who struggle with anxiety, it never hurts to have more tools and tricks to outsmart your brain's panicky smokescreens...you may find relief in the most surprising of places!

For example, you could break out your own personal fidget spinner!  Shown in the articles below to have a number of positives for adults, fidget spinners turn out to have another benefit.  Your brain can't think anxiety-producing and sustaining thoughts as easily if it's distracted by a sparkly, whirring toy that requires soothing fine motor movement to operate it!  Try it out and see what you think...if you find it helpful, it's easy to carry along in a bag or purse.

Fidget spinners also manage your attention, keep you calm, and help you focus:

Finally, if you're inspired and/or a DIY lover, try making your own!:

How to Get Good Mental Health

Want to bring more Happiness and Positivity into your life and into the world in general?  It’s certainly needed!  Did you know that Berkeley is home to the “Greater Good Science Center”?!?  Their whole purpose is to research, generate and promote well-being (sounds like a good job, doesn’t it?  I like to think that this is a lot of what I do with each client at RhythmLife Psychotherapy).

One of my favorite sections is called ‘Greater Good In Action,’ which provides practical tools for building the positive:
